History

Bluegrass on the Waccamaw began about thirteen years ago (1996) as an idea between two friends. Their thoughts were to provide a "World Class Bluegrass Music Show" and use the setting of the old "Peanut Warehouse" on the waterfront in downtown Conway, S.C. The ticket prices at the major bluegrass festivals were rising to the point that an average (?) person with a family found it very expensive to attend. It was then decided to make this program "Free To The Public" After quite a bit of thought and planning, this idea was put into effect.

Art Work by: BARB KRUMM, 1997

On May 17th of 1997 the first "Bluegrass on the Waccamaw" show was set in motion and the rest is history for downtown Conway. Major bluegrass bands performed the first year and each year since then. Some of the Premier bands include IIIrd Tyme Out, The Grascals, The Larry Stephenson Band, Grasstowne, J.D. Crowe & The New South, David Parmeley & Continental Divide, (Bluegrass Cardinals Reunion), Baucom, Bibey & Blueridge, The United States Navy Band, Country Current, The Lewis Family, The James King Band, The Reno Brothers, Ronnie Reno & The Reno Tradition, Charlie Waller & The Country Gentlemen, Randy Waller & The Country Gentlemen, Mountain Heart, The Circuit Riders, The Stevens Sisters, Lou Reid & Carolina, Sally Jones & the Sidewinders, The Deep River Band (From England), Dry Branch Fire Squad, Junior Sisk & Rambler's Choice, Jeanette Williams & Clearwater, The Chapmans, The Snyder Family Band, The Gena Britt Band, and The Bluegrass Strangers.

Along with the major bands, several area bands were featured each year. These include Sounds of Grass, The Far City Boys, Jimmie Stone & The Southland Boys, Ramona Church & Carolina Road, The Flatland Ramblers, Common Ground, The Morris Brothers, Carolina Sonshine, The Everett Brothers, The Hagar's Mountain Boys, New River Gospel, The Drovers Old Time Medicine Show, The County Line Band, Solid Ground, New Classic Grass, Martin, Heron, & Bone, Sawgrass, Flatt City, The Red White Family, and The Marshgrass Mamas.

The intent of the show is being fulfilled as people drive long distances to attend along with people who live in and near Conway.

As long as we can, we will keep this show "Free to the Public" and will present professional and area bands in a World-Class setting.
